style history challenge

Monty Are I merch store tee / thrifted Angel Jeans shorts / ASOS bow belt / eBay socks / hairbow from Beijing markets

Today I challenged myself to create an outfit that combined the major features of my style throughout the years. Being a late bloomer, I've only gone through a couple major style transitions, and they're about as ubiquitous as they come.

Starkville, Mississippi, wasn't really the most fashion-forward of environments, so for much of my early adolescence, I didn't have even the vaguest notion of personal style. We had to drive to the next town over just to shop at an actual mall. In 2007, Barnes & Noble opened; it was doubly exciting because it was home to the city's very first escalator! I wouldn't necessarily call Starkville 'backwoods' like the whole rural hillbilly farmer stereotype...but, you couldn't exactly call it a bustling metropolis.

When I was about 15, I began to dip my toes into alternative. Band tees, Chucks, chunky oxidized silver jewelry, indiscriminately mass-produced merchandise from Hot Topic... But most of me remained firmly entrenched in my previous staid unfashionableness, which meant that I paired intricatedly-decorated band tees with ill-fitting flare jeans from Wal-Mart and sparkly velour tracksuit jackets. I call that era the 'half-hearted alternative brat' look.

I just noticed that my wall decorations still match that old persona. :D

From the beginning of 2010, my tastes took a sudden turn in the exact opposite direct, to an almost childlike feminine aesthetic. For a while I was super-girly and overdone to the absolute extreme.

I think that by now, my style has mellowed out a little; it's still decidedly feminine, but I feel like nowadays I dress more age-appropriately. I also prefer simplicity to fussiness, and my outfits no longer resemble costumes.

This outfit is made up of...

From my younger adolescence: the band tee and denim cutoffs. From my childish girly phase: the excessively huge hairbow. From my current style: the belt, otk socks, and lipstick.

What's the thread that ties all these phases together? My hair! I first dyed it during my alternative stage, and I've made it work for each of my subsequent style transitions. However my style changes in the future, I hope that my blue hair will be a part of it. :)

And, of course, Monty Are I remains one of my absolute favorite bands! :)

I had a lot of fun putting this outfit together as well as reminiscing about my personal style history. I'm interested in how your style has changed over time, so I invite you to take this challenge! If you do, be sure to stick the link in the comments, and I'll add it to this post. :D
